Great book about a horrible crime against the First Amendment

I remember hearing about the assassination of a radio talk show host that I was unfamiliar with, yet he was huge in the midwest, in the 1980s.
I wanted to read up on this incident, yet none of my libraries had anything about it. I went to Amazon, found this book, ordered it for less than $5, received it in a week and found it to be a great read. For anyone who appreciates true crime stories, this is a great book.

Stephen Singular graduated from the University of Kansas in 1972 and has worked for “The Denver Post” since 1982. This 1989 book has 27 chapters in its 320 pages, but no ‘Index’ for references. This is the story about a radio talk show host who was never polite and attacked his callers. One evening he was shot to death at his townhouse by members of the “Order”, armed neo-Nazis who believed in a radical right wing philosophy. The FBI classifies them as domestic terrorists (who also rob to gain funds). Pictures are found on pages 161-172. Alan Berg had temper tantrums as a young boy. He grew up with red hair, tall and thin. Did his contrariness result from a brain illness? His hair was combed over his forehead to hide scars from brain surgery (a physical illness). Berg smoked three packs of cigarettes of unfiltered cigarettes and drank fifty cups of coffee a day! [No mention of what this did to his personality.]

His antics gave him high ratings. [What does this say about his audience?] It also got him fired or suspended. Berg insulted his callers, cut them off, and was abrasive and irreverent. [Ever know guys like this?] He was threatened in the studio by an intruder once. He liked to offend everyone! [Isn’t sunbathing a means of getting vitamin D?] Berg avoided trouble with the FCC by never using obscenities, but some of his callers did. He was the MOST liked and disliked media personality in Denver. One evening he was shot to death outside of his townhouse. Would his murder make him famous? This was the biggest investigation in the history of Denver Colorado. Who had the motive to kill him? Anyone of his listeners? Many found him intolerable.

Chapter 2 tells of his performance on the air. The murder was big news around the country. A reward of $20,000 was offered. There were no eyewitnesses; one woman saw two men in a full-size car parked by Berg’s townhouse. One possible suspect moved away (p.34). The police waited for a break in the case (p.36). This was the largest investigation by the FBI into domestic terrorists. Berg grew up in a Chicago South Side neighborhood that is black now. Chapter 3 tells about his family’s life. He started work at an early age. His father Joseph was a dentist. Chapter 4 tells about the “Aryan Nations” and its history. Chapter 5 describes Alan’s youth. He sold shoes on weekends, he married Judy Halpern after getting a law degree. Chapter 6 tells about the neo-Nazis and their terrorist ideas.

Berg practiced criminal law in Chicago and earned a high five-figure income due to his skills (Chapter 7). But he developed a mild form of epilepsy. [Brain damage?] It got worse. He started to drink and had personality changes. Alan entered a hospital them became a shoe salesman and did well until he was fired for ignoring an important customer. The 1980s saw political changes (Chapter 10). Berg succeeded as a haberdasher (Chapter 11). In 1971 he was part of a radio show. He had a gift of gab but had problems (p.99). He sounded like an honest man. But he fabricated stories about himself (p.102). He pushed his audience’s buttons, and became a rude screamer (p.104).

Chapter 12 tells about the “Aryan Nation” by a member. By the 1970s AM radio was losing its music audience and turned to Talk Radio to attract listeners. [It gives the appearance of open discussion to anyone who calls in.] The Long John Nebel show was a model. Berg sought controversy to build an audience (Chapter 13). [This is how Jerry Springer surpassed Oprah in viewing audiences.] Berg was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The operation to remove it took eight hours, but he recovered. He became more hostile and belligerent. The more obnoxious, the higher his ratings (p.123). [Is this technique copied by others?] Chapter 14 tells about Robert Jay Mathews; he met others who shared his Nazi policies. Was this caused by reading “The Turner Diaries”?

Berg went to another radio station (Chapter 15). Then back to the one that fired him! Berg attracted listeners even if they looked down on him (p.149). His personality changed. The Aryan Nation planned robberies to get money, then counterfeiting $50 bills and a bank robbery (Chapter 16). Berg continued his shows (Chapter 17). The farm -debt situation worsened. Samples of his conversations are given. The Aryan Nation did another bank job (Chapter 18). “60 Minutes” did a show on radio talk shows. Berg invited a right-wing Evangelist to his show (Chapter 19). The Aryan Warriors robbed a Transport Service company (Chapter 20). Some gathered the names of deceased infants to create false identities. They bombed a porno theater. [Are these protected by organized crime?] They robbed a Transport for its cash. A synagogue was bombed. They printed counterfeit $10 bills and bought weapons. A suspected traitor was killed and buried in a forest. They planned an assassination. Surveillance began (Chapter 21). Berg took pride in being an entertainer; he had a new girlfriend Linda McVey.

Information on Berg was available (Chapter 22). Then Berg’s body was found! This got national coverage in the press. A suspicious clerk noted a license plate number on a $10 bill (Chapter 23). Another Transport robbery got $3.6 million. The loot was split among the twelve participants. They planned to rob Brink’s in San Francisco, but it was too risky. One member was arrested and made a deal (p.242). The FBI was on their trail (Chapter 24). The members issued a “Declaration of War” (p.251). [This tells you about their thinking.] One member cooperated with the FBI (Chapter 25). Others were rounded up. Pages 272 to 275 has their operations guide. Chapter 26 tells about those who were not yet captured. The RICO Act was used against them, it allowed seizure of their property. Nearly all were captured. The trial began in Seattle in Sept. 1985, it was the largest trial of a white-supremacy group in American history (Chapter 27). All were found guilty (p.300). The ‘Epitaph’ contains samples of the conversations from Berg’s shows. Then descriptions of scenes in Denver.

Many people think they are getting accurate views or opinions from talk radio shows. But you don’t know who the speakers are, its not like a Letter to the Editor in a newspaper. They can have an agenda in telling their stories. About ten years ago I heard about a caller who said oil companies were not responsible for rising gasoline prices, it was done by the local gas station; she knew because her husband worked for an oil company. But every franchised gas station gets a daily telephone call to tell what the price would be set for that day, this fact is unknown to most listeners.

Who Would Want to Kill Alan Berg?

Alan Berg was radio shock jock, but he was nowhere near as renowned as Howard Stern, and his show was only broadcast in Colorado. He was murdered in the mid-1980's by white extremists, who would later be all over the news in the Oklahoma City bombing. If their motive was to kill a Jewish liberal with a big mouth, the question is this; why did they bother to assassinate Alan Berg? Did anybody take him seriously enough to want to kill him?

Alan Berg was a man who'd accomplished many things; he'd been a lawyer, an entrepreneur, clothing store owner, and radio personality. He was also a loser; he destroyed his lucrative law practice in Chicago by drinking too much, then ruined his marriage by having an affair with an employee. He got his job in radio as a fluke; his talent as a salesman got him a gig doing radio ads, and from there he ended up with a radio call-in show. But he had no particular talent; he wasn't a great writer or reporter, and he wasn't a comedian. He would just say shocking things.

There was value to this book when it came out in 1989. It was a warning to the FBI that the right-wing militia movement was gaining too much ground. These groups were all over the USA and they were over-armed and over-eager to get into a fight. They may have picked an easy (and trivial) target in Alan Berg, but they did move on to bigger things, like blowing up Federal Buildings.

Even terrorists start small. This was just the begining.

I was given this book to read by an associate where I work. After reading it, I purchased as many copies as I could obtain to circulate within the company I work. It is an excellent read... a short read... but a much needed lesson on what it means to be a representative of a company that values not only it's customers, but employees as well. What an awesome find this book was. A true story and worth circulation. If it changes one person, it has served it's purpose.

Compelling anecdotes, unreliable suggestions

A key fault of this book is its vague suggestion that most of its strategies have universal applicability. Often, particular financing methods work only for specific sectors in specific regions. These limitations are rarely addressed.
On balance, however, it is worth reading if you buy small businesses. The key theme -- that buyers and sellers should look at a deal from all angles -- is important. The market for small businesses is oddly homogeneous; business brokers would have you believe the only way to buy/sell is with a down payment, and seller paper. Nothing could be further from the truth. Deals can be assembled in countless ways, often on far more advantageous terms, both for sellers and buyers.

Great Book!

This book suggest in the Preface that you must develop a "no cash down mentality"! Great advice and Great Book! I bought this book studied it and others for about a year. This was by far the best and most comprehensive. I bought this book and just closed on my first business purchase with no money down on December 26, using several of the techniques from the book. If you are serious but a little apprehensive, I highly recommend this book.

Superb book for creative financing ideas!

As someone who has been a huge advocate of creatively approaching the small business financing "issue", I absolutely loved this book. The author, Arnold Goldstein, strongly encourages the reader to focus on looking at the business from all angles in order to identify financing or cash generation opportunities. Instead of automatically moving to the generic, oft-repeated, downpayment + bank loan approach, this book provides numerous resources to tap to reduce the amount of cash you would personally need to contribute to the deal. Have you ever heard of a "leveraged buyout (LBO)"? Well, in simple terms, that occurs when one entity buys another with little or no of their own money or any equity for that matter, instead using the target company's assets and cash flow to access debt financing from a number of different sources. Small businesses are too small to attract the attention of LBO financing entities but this book shows you how to do basically the same thing using different sources.

"How to Buy a Great Business with No Cash Down" talks about how to find the cash to buy a business so it's focused on acquisition financing. However, many of the suggestions contained within the book are applicable to businesses who wish to expand. Why? A number of the recommendations have to do with approaching entities who will benefit from the expansion that will occur upon your purchase of the company. Therefore, if you wish to expand, those same arguments prevail.

Sources of financing covered in the book include: supplier and vendor financing, customer pre-pays, accounts receivables financing, inventory financing, and seller financing, among many others. Arnold Goldstein provides numerous examples and case studies from actual experience (his and his clients) to help drive home what seems to be his primary point: capital exists everywhere, you just have to take the same creative approach in finding it that you do in finding other types of resources in other areas of your business.

If you are buying a business, this book will help you not only identify additional financing sources for your acquisition, but also get you to view the business you are purchasing more strategically and wholistically. And that will put you in very good stead indeed once the deal closes and the real work begins.

Kylie Hagan regarded with keen interest the handsome specimen of a man dressed in a dark business suit, who had just walked into her florist shop. That was so unlike her. She couldn't recall the last time a member of the male species had grabbed her attention. Denzel Washington didn't count, since each and every time she saw him on the movie screen it was an automatic drool.

She continued watering her plants, thinking that the woman he was about to buy flowers for was indeed very lucky. The good news was that he had selected her florist shop -- she was the newbie in town, and Kylie needed all the business she could get, since she'd only been open for a couple of months. Business was good but she needed to come up with ways to make it even better.

Her heart jumped nervously when, instead of looking around at her vast selection of green plants and floral arrangements, he headed straight for the counter. Evidently he was a man who knew what he wanted and what he needed to woo his woman.

"May I help you?" she asked, thinking that with a face and physique like his, he probably didn't need much help at all. He stood tall, six-three at least, with a muscular build, a clean-shaven head, chocolate-brown eyes and skin tone of the richest cocoa, altogether a striking combination. The drool she usually reserved only for Denzel was beginning to make her mouth feel wet. As she continued to look at him, waiting for his response, she suddenly noticed that he wasn't smiling. In fact, he appeared downright annoyed.

"I'm here to see Kylie Hagan."

Kylie lifted her eyebrows and the smile on her face began fading at his rough and irritated tone of voice. What business did this man have with her? All her bills were current, which meant he couldn't be there to collect anything. And if he was a salesman, with his less than desirable attitude, she wouldn't be buying what-ever it was he was selling.

"I'm Kylie Hagan."

Surprise flickered in his drop-dead gorgeous eyes.

"You're Kylie Hagan?"

"That's right and who are you?"

"Chance Steele."

The name didn't ring a bell, but then she had only recently moved to the area. "And what can I do for you, Mr. Steele?"

He stared at her for a moment, and then he said, "The only thing you can do for me, Ms. Hagan, is keep your daughter away from my son."

Kylie froze. The man's words were not what she had expected. For a long moment she stared back at him, wondering if she had misunderstood. But all it took was the deep scowl on his face to let her know she had not.

"Keep my daughter away from your son?" she repeated when she finally found her voice.

"Yes. I found this note yesterday that evidently dropped out of Marcus's backpack. They were planning on cutting school together on Friday," he said as he pulled a piece of paper out of the pocket of his jacket.

"What!" Kylie shrieked, grabbing the paper out of his hand.

"You heard me and you can read it for yourself," he said, crossing his arms over his chest.

Kylie read, then after the first few lines she wished she hadn't. Three emotions enveloped her: hurt, betrayal and anger. Tiffany had always promised that if she ever got serious about a boy that she would tell her. Granted, she and Tiffany hadn't been that close lately, but a promise was a promise.

"Now can you see why I want your daughter kept away from my son?"

Chance Steele's question sliced through Kylie's tormented mind and grated on her last nerve, deepening her anger. She came from behind the counter to stand directly in front of him. "Don't you dare place all the blame on Tiffany, Mr. Steele. If I read this note correctly, she was merely responding to a note your son had sent asking her to cut school. The nerve of him doing such a thing!"

"Look, Ms. Hagan, we can stand here all day and we won't agree who's to blame. But I think we will agree on the fact that your daughter and my son shouldn't even be thinking about cutting school. I have big plans for my son's future that include him attending college."

Kylie glared at him. "And you don't think I have those same plans for my daughter?" she snapped. "Tiffany is a good kid."

"So is Marcus," he snapped back.

Kylie breathed in deeply and closed her eyes in a concerted effort to calm down before a blood vessel burst in her head. They weren't getting anywhere biting each other's heads off.

"Ms. Hagan, are you all right?"

She slowly opened her eyes to focus on the man looming over her. Concern was evident in his gaze.

"Yes, I'm fine."

"Look, I'm sorry I came barging in here like this," he said, the tone of his voice calmer, apologetic.

"But after reading that note I got upset."

She nodded. "I can understand why. I'm pretty upset myself."

"Did you know our kids were hung up on each other?" he asked. She could tell that he was trying to maintain a composed demeanor.

"Mr. Steele, until you walked into my shop and dropped your son's name, I had no idea he even existed. Tiffany and I moved here a few months ago from New York State, right before the start of the new school year. I knew she had made some new friends but she's never mentioned anyone's name in particular."

"Okay, so as parents, what do you think we should do?" he asked.

His voice was drenched in wariness and Kylie could tell he was deeply bothered by all of this, but then he wasn't the only one. "The one thing we shouldn't do is demand that they not see each other. Telling them to stay away from each other will only make them want to see each other more. Teenagers will always deliberately do the opposite of what their parents want them to do. And once they start rebelling, it will be almost impossible to do anything."

She didn't have to tell him that she knew firsthand how that worked. Her parents had tried to keep her and Sam apart, which only made her want him more. The more she and Sam had sneaked around, the more risks they had taken until she had eventually gotten pregnant at sixteen…the same age Tiffany would be in about ten months.

"We have to do something. In confronting Marcus about that letter, I've thrown a monkey wrench into their plans for Friday. But how can we be sure this won't happen again?"

At the sound of Chance's voice, Kylie dragged her thoughts back to the present. "I'll talk to Tiffany and, like I said, she's a good kid."

"Yes, but it appears that my son and your daughter are at the age where overactive hormones cancel out good sense. We need to do what we can to make sure those hormones stay under control."

"I fully agree."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card. "This is how to reach me if you need me to do anything further on my end. I talked to Marcus but things didn't go well. I did the one thing you indicated I should not have done, which was demand that he stay away from Tiffany. I don't think I've ever seen him that angry or rebellious."

Kylie nodded as she took the card from him. She didn't want to think about her upcoming talk with Tiffany. "I appreciate you dropping by and bringing this to my attention."

"Like I said earlier, I apologize that my approach wasn't more subtle. But Marcus's last words to me this morning were that nobody would stop him from seeing Tiffany. I was furious and still riled up when I decided to come over here."

He sighed deeply and then added, "It's not easy raising a teenager these days."

"Don't I know it," Kylie said softly, feeling terribly drained but knowing she would need all her strength when she confronted Tiffany after school.

"Well, I'd better be going."

"Again, thanks for coming by and letting me know what's going on."

He nodded. "There was no way I could not let you know, considering what they'd planned to do. Have a good day, Ms. Hagan."

As Kylie watched him walk out of her shop, she knew that as much as she wished it to be so, there was no way that this would be a good day.

They will Steele your heart....

The Steeles are here and I'm SO happy to meet them!

This book introduces us to yummy Chance Steele, the eldest of the four sexy brothers from North Carolina and oh my, is he gorgeous! With a teenage son to raise alone and a company to run, he hasn't really given much thought to a serious relationship.

Kylie Hagan, owner of the town's local flower shop also faces the same dilemma, with a teenage daughter to raise -- romance is the furthest thing from her mind.

That is, until their kids get together. It seems the teenagers are in love (or so they say!) And guess what? Kylie and Chance are NOT happy campers. They both have high hopes for each of their kids and a budding relationship isn't one of them.

However, will their children's relationship awaken them to something they've been denying themselves? To the needs and mutual attraction they've been ignoring? Maybe...

This book is wonderful and Ms. Jackson's trademark love scenes are awesome: passionate, hot and too sexy. I can't wait to meet the next sexy brother - the family bad boy - Sebastian (Bas). Thank you, Ms. Jackson!

I have been a fan of Mrs. Jackson's since 1994 when she first introduced her first family, The Madaris's and I have yet to be disppointed. She takes such time with her characters and developing their romances that is so endearing. She also puts such emphasis on things such as the holding of each other's gazes, or how they often stare into each other's eyes as if no one else is in the room that it makes my heart pound just reading it. And the love scenes . . . forget about it.

I will continue to read any and everything that she puts out because she pours her heart and soul into making her readers happy. And for the single readers, she gives a little hope that one day we too will find our "solid soul" mates. I just finished reading Solid Soul and ordered Night Heat (Bas's story) prior to this posting. I am glad that Bas ditched Cassandra with her snobbish self. I also hope that Lena and Donovan get the opportunity to develop their story as well. She needs love too and I see the potential for them as well as they will now be intertwined with one another.

"Steele" In Love

Brenda Jackson has graced us with another family to fall in love with. This time it is the Steele Family - men worthy of loving and who are honor bound with family values worth fighting for. In Solid Soul, we meet Chance Steele, who is a widower with a teen age son. Chance is thrown into a meeting with Kylie Hagan, his son's Marcus' new friend, Tiffany's mother. Marcus and Tiffany decide it is way past time that their parents start dating again. Therefore, they concoct an imaginary love story between Marcus and Tiffany, knowing how Chance and Kylie feel about teenagers getting seriously involved. However, Marcus and Tiffany's plan works out just right for them when the tray is turned and their parents, Chance and Kylie fall into the web of love. Kylie is reluctant at first to become involved with Chance or any other man, but Chance is not just any other man -- he is a Steele, who knows what he wants, goes after what he wants, and does not give up until he has accomplished his goal.

This is an exciting, sometimes funny, but also very serious story of love and romance and family issues. I love the way Ms. Jackson ties in the real life issues in her stories and this one is no exception. After reading Solid Soul, you are bound to look forward to seeing what happens with the other Steeles and find out which Steele man is next to fall in the love. The second book in the Steele series is Night Heat, a story of fiery and sizzling love.
