Remarkable first book from promising author!

First published in 1947 and available in a wide variety of editions since then, Farley Mowat's first and most distant book is still remarkably readable in the world of the 21st century. It concerns one of the stranger human sagas of the last century, that of the discovery and destruction of a remote Inuit society, the Ihalmiut, in Canada's north. The setting of the book is far enough away in time for us to marvel at how little things have changed since. The contemptuous attitude of European man for the aborigine seems hardly to have altered over the years. We are still hard put to understand the needs of the first peoples and how to answer them.
Farley Mowat has combined a fine sensitivity for the natural environment with a sharp eye for the details of man's place within it. It must be exceedingly rare in the history of anthropology that such an inexperienced investigator has taken such pains to get to the source of his information. Mowat lived among the Ihalmiut for over a year to write the book. During that time he witnessed the rapid deterioration of the small group which remained, and tried to examine the causes of their decline. With very deft prose for such a young writer, he points out the difference between the intentions and the actions of the European discoverers of The People (as they refer to themselves) and the consequences of such disparity. The Ihalmiut were exploited in much the same way as any other tribal band found wandering by the early explorers. However, as Mowat points out, this was an exceptional group which had survived the extreme rigours of a barren land (known to us simply as The Barrens) for so many generations, only to be felled by contact with the very race which might have provided them with so much assistance.
The Ihalmiut are long gone from their homeland but their story serves to remind us of our often difficult relationship with the land and the people on it. Perhaps, as a race of city-dwellers, we need to consider our place in the natural environment more than ever. Mowat's work is a just accounting of where we stand in relationship to nature. Nor does he suggest that we should all go and live in the tundra. Yet People of the Deer is a source of considerable inspiration for those now ready to reflect on the unbalancing effect of contemporary values.

This book is magic. You will never think about a small band of Indians as statistics again. This book does volumes to make people of our society really feel what goes on in traditional societies. To feel jealous of their solidarity. To feel unloved by our own. It's great! READ IT.

Wonderful and yet sad...

When published in 1951 this book was a cry for help - not just to help the Ihalmiut but to help ourselves. A well crafted book of one man's understanding, in a limited way, of the hard, harsh life of the Eskimos who live along side the deer, the lakes, and the spirits of the Barrens. The book is full of his memories, some sad, some wonderful. We get images of summer, with its life, the birds, eggs, and kids going out with toy slings to help gather food. We learn about the way the People lived, worked, and loved inside their families and society. We hear their tales of where they came from, how the animals were brought into the world by a woman, and how dangerous it is for men, both to their body and their soul, when they are all alone. Once there were thousands of them - sharing their tools, enjoying the raw meat of the kill, enjoying the happiness of never needing anything.
Wonderful. Depressing. Sad. Lovely. Is there anything we can still do about this? Is there anything we can do for ourselves?

Disappointment

I had read Costain's history of the Plantagenets in four paperbacks form and was enchanted by them. I read them several times, never tiring of his style and the special descriptions which make these historical figures come alive. Eventually my paper backs fell apart and I thought what a better idea to buy this four hard-cover set to replace what I had lost.

To my dismay, as I began re-reading it again last night I found that this hard-cover set was an abridgement and all material that made the paperback editions fascinating had been edited out. The flavor was gone. I almost wept. I couldn't understand the necessity of the abridgement, and finally grew to resent the editing out of all that made this history so exciting and fascinating. I was so disappointed that I just now ordered the four separate copies of the paperback editions.

These books are defintely worth having and reading a number of times, but please eschew this form of Costain's history and buy the paperbacks. You will not be sorry.

About the Author
Pierre Davis (aka Pierre Ouellette) entered the creative realm at age 13 as a lead guitarist for numerous bands in the Pacific Northwest, including the nationally known Paul Revere and the Raiders. He went on to play with such jazz luminaries as saxophonist Jim Pepper and bassist David Friesen, all the while composing sound tracks for short films and videos. To support his music habit, he became a freelance writer and eventually co-founded an advertising agency specializing in high technology, serving as its creative director. During this period, he wrote two novels eventually published in seven languages, with both optioned for film. Pierre currently resides in Portland, Oregon, where he now devotes himself exclusively to writing fiction and playing jazz guitar in a little bar just down the street.

A CLASS ABOVE THE REST

A BREED APART is one of the books I enjoyed most this year. As a scientist myself I had came to appreciate Pierre Davis' (aka Pierre Ouellette's) crisp writing, tight plot-lines and cutting-edge science - which is not only well understood but also well explained. This book is an excellent example, although it may not be the author's best.

A disgraced cop with a lot of ex-girlfriend baggage; an escaped dog with a lot of extra genetic baggage; a sadistic assassin with a Mongolian fixation; homeless honor and corporate greed and (lack of) ethics; a reclusive puppet-master billionaire clinging to life; and an ironic twist in the arguments both for and against stem-cell research.

If you are a fan of late Michael Crichton, view this as the baby that JURASSIC PARK and RISING SUN would have had: A real page-turner technothriller with philosophical hooks.

The book could use more subtle location separators within the pages (three stars would be as effective as those thick black lines) and a better cover-art. But one shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Couldn't put it down!

This book combines mystery, suspense and science in a really novel kind of way. The characters, especially the detective at the center of the story, are vivid and well-defined. But the real hero of the book is the dog, which the author manages to bring to life in a most convincing manner. Throughout the book, he manages to take the most high-flying of concepts and bring them down to earth so that they constantly propel the story along: Advanced stem-cell research, animal intelligence, and various neurological diseases, some of them quite exotic. The pace never falters and the ending provides a very gratifying payoff.

survival of the fittest

I found this thriller to be completely engrossing; I picked it up at the grocery store for lunch-hour reading and had a hard time putting it down to go back to my desk!

What I found particularly good: characterization; plot; action; and resolution. As the story unfolded, the author provided enough bits of each interwoven story to build into a coherent whole. At first I wondered where he was going with some of the elements, but by the midpoint it was clear where the relationships were. In the meantime, the individual characters (including the dog) were sufficiently interesting and sympathetic (with the exception of the killer - brrrr! - he was interesting but most definitely NOT sympathetic!) to keep me involved and patient for the next clue.

I would disagree with the reviewer who found it slow-paced. It is, however, dense: not for someone who wants a quick, easy read or who is easily distracted. You will miss some good stuff if you don't concentrate. I am a reader who doesn't often try to figure out the endings of mystery novels, and since I don't try, I am a little disappointed if it's too easy to follow and predict what happens. This book definitely did not have that problem.

The resolution of "A Breed Apart" sets up the possibility of a sequel, and I for one would be happy to read it.

The reviewer who stated that Darwin "talked in circles" and "didn't provide any evidence" obviously doesn't have a basic understanding of evolutionary biology. He did quite well providing evidence especially with the limited knowledge of genetics, DNA, biomechanics, and biochemistry. Gregor Mendel's works were not discovered when this was published. He went off his study of barnacles, the domestic dog, and the animals brought back from his world travels ( namely South America, and the Galapagos). A must read!

Grade 3-6-Akiko, now in fifth grade, is more ready than ever to trade places with her robot look-alike and zoom into space. This time, the girl and her alien friends are headed for the Intergalactic Space Patrollers Training Camp on Zarga Baffa. Can Akiko withstand the gross food, the physical and mental tests, and her training master's rough treatment? She starts to fail miserably and wonders if she should "cry blue" and leave the program. However, as her pal Spuckler says, she's "a fighter, not a quitter." When an accident puts the training masters' lives in danger, she is the one student willing to break the rules to rescue them. There is humor as well as action in this lively confection; Akiko struggles to earn Ds (for distinguished) and Fs (for first-rate). She consults a Yoda-like mentor who gives her a mysterious container and urges her to "Draw upon the power within" to open it-then reveals that it is a jar of jelly with a stubborn lid. Akiko's confusion as she faces the often-wacky unknowns of intergalactic society will resonate with kids trying to figure out what's going on around them here on Earth. Back and better than ever!

This is another great book in the excellent "Akiko" series. The first thing you'll notice is that Akiko has a new, more mature look and personality. The changes are realistic, though, so it feels more like she's growing up along with you, instead of like she's become someone unfamiliar. In this chapter of the series, Akiko, along with her friends, is sent to a tough training school on the planet Zarga Baffa. There, she must survive challenges such as Humbling Week, Yoodoo Egg Rescue, and Nagnog Lizard Riding. The plot moves at a fast clip (I finished it in 2 1/2 hours), and the tone is consistently upbeat and humorous, making it a smooth, enjoyable read for kids, teens and adults alike. It's also important to note that this can be read even if you don't have any prior experience with the series, since it starts off as a new adventure and ends neatly and happily. I would reccomend reading the other books first, though, because you'll be more familiar with the characters. Overall, this is a wonderful book for all ages and reading levels.

We consider this a true "find." My 6 year old daughter picked up the first book, the Planet Smoo, and fell in love with the ridiculous characters and nutty planets. Then all of a sudden, the 8 year old son was hanging around, enthralled by each adventure. We've enjoyed every book in the series and recommend it to kids between 4 and 12.

Consistent pleasure

Another good addition to a fun series. Interesting characters, mixing adventure and humor, offer a pleasurable bedtime read for both parent and child. The whole series is full of wonderful fantasy fit for boys and girls 7-12.
