Patience is a decision

The book was a little different than what I expected. It gives short stories when patience should be used. I was expecting a little more insight on what you can do when you're having trouble with excercising patience. The book did have some good points and for the price I suppose it was an okay read.

Valuable and Very Accessible, but sometimes shallow and repetitive

In buying this book, I must admit I am biased against most "feel good"
self help books in that they offer quick fixes- that occasionally work- with little depth, substance or lasting value. This being said I am a neurotic (very impatient) overly educated person living in arguably the brainiest, and the most positively multi-cultural, cities in the US, Cambridge MA where MIT and, in particular, Harvard rule. Nevertheless, patience has always been a major problem for me and my family.

I searched on Amazon for a book on patience and there were surprisingly
only a couple of responses (any other ideas): this and a classic book on Buddhism (I am a part time Masters Degree student at Harvard extension school who is very into Asian thought and spirituality- as well as a small business owner and a volunteer group therapist).

The good: As many people have said, this is a very well written book.
There a few nuggets of wisdom here; particularly the statements regarding
patience's relation to a need to control and rage.These insights were
"very helpful." I also liked her statements on the socio cultural effects
of impatience, even though they were not particularly original.

The not so good: the very short section format, which I found frustrating and, at times, superficial. Also, the author continuously bemoans the negative effects of the accelerating pace of modern life, yet these
short sections feeds in to her own notion of people's inability to focus on any activity for an extended period of time. Also The lack of detailed techniques, or exercises, for improving patience- most books of this genre are better at giving solutions, even if they are sometimes a bit lames. The author seems to me to not have made a lot of progress in dealing with her patience (she is very aware though). However, her candor on these issues is quite refreshing.

I realize I am not among the target audience for this type of self help book. However, I feel this genre should be subject to the same rigorous critique as other works that espouse life changing hypothesis, and in not doing so I feel that there is a small element of subtle "brainwashing" that permeates the mass media, and celebrates the "dumbed down" worldview that afflicts and paralyzes our culture (sorry to rain on your parade.) I know this may make me sound like an intellectual elitist, which I partially am. Nevertheless,this book is much better than nothing. Also, I am planning to take up life coaching and this gives me an additional insight into how a coach thinks and approaches problems, because that is somewhat the author's orientation. However, a very good book on this topic still needs to be written (like some of the books on procrastination), although the author makes a very sincere and valid attempt.

About the Author
H. Kent Baker, PhD, CFA, CMA, is University Professor of Finance at the Kogod School of Business at American University, Washington, D.C. Before joining the faculty at American University in 1975, he held both faculty and administrative positions at Georgetown University and the University of Maryland. Baker has published extensively in leading academic and professional finance journals. He has consulting and training experience with more than 100 organizations, and has been listed in fifteen biographies, including Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the East, and Outstanding Educators of America.

Robert W. Kolb is the Frank W. Considine Chair of Applied Ethics and Professor of Finance at Loyola University, Chicago. Before this, he was the Assistant Dean, Business and Society, and Director, Center for Business and Society, at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and department chairman at the University of Miami. Kolb is also the author of over twenty books on finance, derivatives, and futures, and has authored numerous articles in leading finance journals.

Useless in Practice

This book is about dividends and share repurchases and the often conflicting academic theories about their value to shareholders.

One academic theory assumes that the stock price is correct given all publicly available information so a share repurchase is interpreted as a signal that management has private information and the stock is undervalued.

Another academic theory is that share repurchases are more tax-efficient than dividends for distributing capital to shareholders, so it is a puzzle to finance professors why corporations even bother with dividends.

This book is a good introduction to the academic theories but it is useless to the manager or investor who needs to decide whether a share repurchase is better than a dividend or an acquisition or something else. For this I would instead recommend a more recent paper entitled 'Introduction to Share Buyback Valuation' by Pedersen which can be found on the internet.

PS: My review of Vermaelen's book is similar because it covers the same academic theories.

A poetical homage to a very human saint

Paul Sabatier's Life of St. Francis of Assisi is considered the first 'modern' biography of this great universally beloved saint. It is richly poetical, mystical, and reverential without being sentimental or effusive. A beautiful simple meditation full of insight into Francis' conman humanity, it does not transform him into a remote icon of devotion. The author's "Protestant" outlook when it was first written (1890's), now seems only mildly liberal by post Vatican II 21st century standards. Yes, the work was originally placed on the Index of Forbidden Books for Catholics (in 1906!) because of some questions about it's historical details (as the previous reviewer noted), but it was removed from the Index in the 1960's some years before Pope Paul VI abolished the Index of Forbidden Books altogether in 1966. The Franciscans themselves now highly recommend the book, calling it "nothing short of astonishing in its power to touch the heart and revive the soul (Franciscan Friars TOR Website) and so do I. However, if one wishes a 'more reliable' version of Sabatier's work, then the freshly translated and slightly edited version by Jon M. Sweeny is available here at Amazon. It is entitled ' The Road to Assisi: The Essential Biography of St. Francis by Paul Sabatier". The English has been updated and some of the troubling details of history (minor to be sure) have been discretely removed. It also includes a lengthy introduction which explains why the book was originally placed on the Index of Forbidden books (over 100 years ago)and why the initial reservations no longer apply. There are some criticisms of Sweeny's edition in the comments section, to the effect that he omits Sabatier's own introduction and appendix citing his sources. Nonetheless, Sweeny has done an excellent job updating the English and he also includes some helpful annotations and notes right within the text. But of course, it's not free.

A long, not so easy to plow through book. It is well written but heavy reading. If you are looking for a brief introduction to St. Francis you may wish to look elsewhere.

St. Francis: A Model of Christianity to be Followed, if Only In One's Heart.

I enjoyed this book. At times it got a bit too specific and detailed, but over all it has been something
that stimulated thought and action. Thoughts about the necessities of life and the pressures of the world
to conform. From there, decisions as to what can be done to simplify life and make it more focused on
living for Jesus so much more than living in the world. And then the question, "Could someone live this
way again, so surrendered to God and dependent upon His grace?" I wish I could say it could be me...

OH DOCTOR I'M IN TROUBLE

This is the first medical romance I have read from Mills and Boon, I bought this based on my liking for the author Sarah Morgan.
Nikos is a famous and talented doctor treating children. For the past six months he has been having an affair with Ella a children's nurse he works with. Ella has unleashed feelings in him that he is not used to feeling, deciding that he cannot deal with the situation he ends the romance by e-mail. Ella is distraught finding herself pregnant the same day as Nikos sent the dreaded e-mail, she vows that she will never tell him. Unfortunately for Ella her best friend contacts Nikos behind her back.
I enjoyed this book it was a nice read, Ella and Nikos both have their own demons to deal with. The relationship is hot between them and it was a journey for both of them coming to terms with their pasts.

this book touched my heart

This book was good for the Heart! Ella, and Nikos were in a relationship for 6 months. When Niko realized he was starting to have feelings for Ella, He got scared, and ended it. I didn't like the way he ended it, it was by a email. The same day Ella received the email, she found out she was pregnant. Four months latter Ella's close friend wrote to Niko and told him Ella was pregnant with his child. He came to her, and they worked together at the same hospital. Tempers flared, and you got feel the emotions of both Niko, and Ella. Niko wanted to marry Ella, and Ella kept saying no, and giving him back his ring. Niko was sweet, he was not one to give up on something or in this case someone he wanted. Both Niko, and Ella had tragic events happen in their lifes that shaped who they are today. Both were protecting their hearts, so they wouldn't get hurt again. They had to take a chance, and open up to each other about their past, and what had hurt them in life. Once they did break though those walls, it brought them closer. This book touched my heart.

An emotional read

I enjoyed this book and if you enjoy this author, then you will too. Both characters had loads of emotional baggage, the h was more of a basket case in my opinion. I liked the H though, he was gorgeous and caring. I deducted a star because I didn't like the fact that he dumped her via email and never really satisfactorily resolved that part for me. I would have loved him to say that he'd have come back to her eventually because of the way he felt.
