For the past two years, I have been cleaning out my books, giving some away, selling some, recycling some in anticipation of moving to an apartment in the future. It's painful, but finding this forgotten gem on a bottom shelf eased the pain.

Colin Turnbull loved the pygmies. He writes with geniune affection, not about a culture, but about a people. The culture comes through without boring statistics, scientific psyco-babble, or hype. And the forest, too, comes alive beneath his typewriter. I immediately ordered "The Mountain People" and his biography. "The Forest People" opened a whole new world for me; one I vaguely knew existed, but now know intimately. I am a better person for it.

My husband read this book in college and passed it along to me. Wow! It's fascinating to get a glimpse into a culture so different from our own. I don't usually read nonfiction, but this book held my interest.

I found this Book in my Local "BOOKS A MILLION" Bookstore and it was a Wonderful read .I have to admit I had read in other Books the Basic Story of some of the Major Players "GASSPIPE" Anthony Casso ...Feldman the Federal Prosecutor and other members of Organized Crime,But it was very well presented and edited perfectly ...it Flowed and was hard to put down .How lucky we are to have Honorable Law Enforcement officers like Tommy Dades and his Partner who pursued this case with the Tenacity of two Starving Pitbulls chasing a Tender loin .The Intuitive Mistrust by Tommy Dades of the Federal Prosecutors was Amazingly on the Money ...it's nice to read when Good Prevails over EVIL.....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Excellent story of the tracking and capture of the 2 NYC Cops

This is one of those true crime books that is literally hard to put down. During the book, prior to the capture of the cops, you keep wondering how they are going to find whodunit; why; and how. The tenacity of Tommy Dades in pursuing the killers is remarkable. What else makes for interesting reading is the power struggle between the Feds and the State over who is going to prosecute the two cops...and how the Feds screwed the State over this battle. It makes you shake your head in sorrow. It's definitely worth adding to your true crime library. One thing that the book never really explains, though, is what made Eppolito and Caracappa turn to murdering for the mob and betray their trust of the NYC Police. Nevertheless, a great book.

This is a most excellent read and true version of the real deal. A NYC detective, bored, and a few months away from what he felt was a forced retirement, makes a promise to a mother and the rest is simply explosive. Wait until you read how he finally nails them. The one piece of the puzzle he needed to pull it all together. You won't believe it.

It is also a very good look inside the various law enforcement agencies working on this case and the evil that is within some of them.

The Hunger is an insider's take on the crazy life that is the restaurant business, as well as an underdog's tale of survival. Dissatisfied with his corporate career, John DeLucie followed his passion for food to a single cooking class at the New School (where he was named Most Likely to Succeed). He launched his first food gig at SoHo's famed Dean & DeLuca, then cooked at several New York–area restaurants.

For fifteen years, DeLucie worked his way through major challenges, while accepting both successes and failures, until finally opening his restaurant The Waverly Inn—the Greenwich Village sensation. He now shares secrets about the behind-the-scenes details from the tiny kitchen, the front of the house, and outside the restaurant, where the paparazzi gather. A tale of ambition, perseverance, and personal growth narrated with humor, humility, and honesty

This tale of ambition, perseverance in times of adversity, and personal growth begins in the present with the author, now the successful executive chef and part owner of the Waverly Inn in New York, working his buns off yet again, manically multitasking to keep his gastronomic creations flowing, staff hopping, and A-List customers happy. How he got started in the restaurant business, what motivated him to make the "plunge", the disadvantages and challenges he had to overcome, lucky breaks, wise and not so wise moves, people he worked with and what he learned from them as well as from each previous job, and some of the prices he has had to pay on the way to building a solid reputation are all narrated next with humor, humility, honesty, and effective use of flash backs and forwards as the main storytelling device. The author paints a vivid picture of the world he lives in (yes, there's drugs, sex, booze, betrayal, and loves lost), and although accounts of the ups and downs in his life did not always have the force of an intense drama (the narration had a few dead spots here and there), I still think this first-time author did a pretty good job and I thank him for sharing many of his eye-opening experiences with us.

Surprisingly Personal

I've been to the Waverly Inn and bought this book expecting a celebrity tell-all. I was quickly and immediately surprised to be drawn into a story about one man's change in career. Mind you, Delucie certainly dishes with great humor throughout the book, but my favorite parts were the very human stories reflecting his challenges and struggles in the food business mixed in with the glitzy Waverly chapters. I loved the stories of his mother and grandmother's influence on his career choice and his recipes. I found the tales of his wives touching and real. Between the excitement in the kitchen and his personal life, I couldn't put it down. A real 2-sitting read.

I picked this book up as a light read for commuting and was blown away. This engrossing and interesting look "behind the curtain" at the restaurant industry caused me to miss my stop on the train!

I was surprised to see what a great writer John DeLucie was, he really has a knack for creating a scene. The fact that he was so candid and honest about his own mistakes made the book more endearing. I recommend this to anyone who has ever decided to change careers and become a chef - he makes the point that its not easy - or anyone who is curious what it takes to get to the point where your restaurant is one of the premier destinations in NYC.

Great read!
