a gem

For the past two years, I have been cleaning out my books, giving some away, selling some, recycling some in anticipation of moving to an apartment in the future. It's painful, but finding this forgotten gem on a bottom shelf eased the pain.
Colin Turnbull loved the pygmies. He writes with geniune affection, not about a culture, but about a people. The culture comes through without boring statistics, scientific psyco-babble, or hype. And the forest, too, comes alive beneath his typewriter. I immediately ordered "The Mountain People" and his biography. "The Forest People" opened a whole new world for me; one I vaguely knew existed, but now know intimately. I am a better person for it.

surprise - I loved it

My husband read this book in college and passed it along to me. Wow! It's fascinating to get a glimpse into a culture so different from our own. I don't usually read nonfiction, but this book held my interest.
