About the Author
Forrest Mims has been an electronics hobbyist since building a one tube radio kit at the age of 11. Following graduation from Texas A&M University in 1966 and service as a photo intelligence office in Vietnam, he worked for three years with high-powered lasers, solid-state instrumentation, and trained monkeys with the Air Force Weapons Laboratory in New Mexico. Since becoming a full-time writer in 1970, he's written several hundred magazine articles and scholarly papers. His articles and columns have appeared in virtually every significant electronics magazine, including Popular Electronics, Radio-Electronics, and Modern Electronics. His articles on other scientific topics have appeared in a wide range of other publications, including National Geographic World, Science Digest, Highlights for Children, and Scientific American. His editorial exploits have included an assignment from the National Enquirer to evaluate the feasibility of eavesdropping on Howard Hughes by laser (it was possible, but Forrest declined to take part) and getting dropped by Scientific American as their "The Amateur Scientist" columnist because he admitted to the magazine's editors that he was a born-again Christian. His book sales total in the millions, and he is likely the most widely-read electronics writer in the world.

It doesn't get any better than this

I bought my first Forrest Mims book a few decades ago because it was readable, accurate, and fairly priced (we usually have to pick any two, but hot all three). After a long hiatus, I'm trying to kick-start my electronics knowledge and skills, and there's no better place to go than his works. To get the most out of this book you should have a basic understanding of electronics and get your hands dirty building some of the circuits on a breadboard. If you meet those minimal requirements, you can't go wrong buying this book.

FORCED TO BYPASS RADIO SHACK TO STOCK MY PARTS BINS. i WAS PROBABLY WITH mIMS WHEN HE WAS IN SEA.

I got sdtarted in electronics much as brother Mims did. I did all my work in the Air Force, so I was forced to go several years while serving in combat and overseas in places like Okinawa, Galena, Alaska on the Yukon river. but once I discovered all the books Mims had written, I jumped into it and ended up building bomb disposal electronics and that got me in real trouble, because every General in the USAF wanted a complete kit with instyructions and all the things we did not want the world to know about. I spent almost a year of my off duty time writing the booklets with each one and then to get it off my hands I put serial numbers on each kit and had them all sign their life away as receivinging classified materiel.
Probably spent over 900 hours of my off duty time and eventually got a medal for helping the FBI, but I would give it back in a minute if they gave me back all my spare time I wasted building all those high quality kits.
When I was ORDERED to do all this I let them know I was not going to do it on my dime, and my Commander told me not to worry about that and he hooked me up with a supply man to buy all the parts. I started going to the Radio-Shack stores to get the parts I had to have, and made a point of getting many more than really needed, because I knew I would
smoke a number of parts. I also got top of the line parts and not made in China trash. Believe it or not I think I may still have some of the parts that were left over. I only wanted the Radio Shack parts but was forced to get top of the line parts.
So I may still have some top of the line MIL-SPEC parts I was forced to go with. Sorry Radio Shack. I did end up with all your books by Mims and many other books you had for sale. What a CLUSTER ..

I am a Forrest Mims fan

I love Forrest Mims books. They are about electronics before microprocessors took over. I thought he might run out of interesting topics after Circuit Scrapbook Vol 1. Not so. A lot of interesting reading about how electronic stuff works along with circuits you can build to explore the concepts.
