An Overview of Criminalistics

The Casebook of Forensic Detection
Colin Evans is a writer who specialized in true crime. He wrote other books such as “Super Lawyers” and “Killer Doctors”. This book has a ‘Contents’ for its fifteen chapters, an ‘Appendix’ that lists nine famous Forensic Pioneers and their cases, and an ‘Index’ in its 310 pages. Photographs are found in the pages but not listed in the ‘Contents’. The last hundred years or so saw an increase in the use of science to solve crimes. These cases should inform and entertain the reader. There is no Bibliography for these cases. The articles are condensed accounts to cover as many cases in as few pages as possible; this has positive and negative attributes. Bite-mark evidence (Odontology) is no longer considered scientific evidence today. You can also read “Tainting Evidence” by Kelly and Wearne, or Dennis Klatzow’s book “Justice Denied”.
Here are the fifteen chapters in this book.
01) Ballistics. Identify a bullet or shell casing to its firearm.
02) Cause of Death. Suicide, murder, or natural causes.
03) Disputed Documents. Identify the person (or typewriter) who wrote a document.
04) DNA Typing. Identify a person by genetic material.
05) Explosives and Fire. Identifying the explosive can identify the bomber.
06) Fingerprinting. Identifying each person by their fingerprints.
07) Forensic Anthropology. Identifying a person from a skeleton.
08) Odontology. The durability of teeth allows identifying a body.
09) Psychological Profiling. Identifying a person by psychology.
010) Identification of Remains. Bodies are difficult to dispose.
011) Serology. Identify a person by bloodstains.
012) Time of Death. Changes in a body can estimate the time of death.
013) Toxicology. Tests for poison can detect a murder.
014) Trace Evidence. A person can leave trace evidence or take it away.
015) Voiceprints. Identify a person by a voice recording.
Evans’ account of Sacco and Vanzetti is misleading. The robbery murder showed planning (like an experienced criminal gang). Joe Roselli had a strong resemblance to Nicola Sacco. None of the stolen money was recovered. Did one bullet come from Sacco’s pistol? Yes, but the problem in ballistics is they can’t tell when it was fired, during the crime or afterwards and planted. The identification scratched on the bullet’s base was different from the others. The other bullets could not have been fired from Vanzetti’s revolver. Sacco and Vanzetti had alibis but the jury chose to ignore them. Evans oversimplifies this case.
Evans’ account of the Lindbergh Kidnapping also skimps on the facts. Hauptmann had the ransom money passed by John F. Condon, but others also claimed to be the kidnappers. “The Case That Never Dies” by Lloyd C. Gardner is one of many books on this case. Since the Lindbergh family only stayed on the weekend how could Hauptmann have known they would be home Monday night? Then or now, it seems unlikely it was done by one man alone. Hauptmann’s employment record was tampered with so it didn’t show he worked that week. Who wiped away the fingerprints in the nursery? An inside job?
I am not that familiar with the Jeffrey MacDonald case, but this account is one-sided. It doesn’t say why many believe him to be innocent.
