Excellent Introductory Textbook

I was looking for a college-level introduction to biology. I'm reading this for my own enrichment and not as part of a course. I never had the time in college to study biology but was always interested, particularly in genetics. Many years later I decided to self-educate myself and this book is the 3rd college textbook I've read on the subject - two on genetics and now this one to give me a better overall context.
I'm very happy with the book. When I first opened it I saw a mixture of text, figures, figure exercises, etc. and thought that I would just skim a lot of the information. However, I've found it well-written and tightly organized so I've actually read every page and every illustration. The illustrations are excellent and add significantly to understanding the text. In addition, I like the short question and review format at the end of each chapter instead of the traditional 2 or 3 pages of detailed problems.
The 8th edition seemed like a good compromise between currency and cost; it's only 4 years since it's printing and was substantially less expensive than the most current edition. Some of the more expensive editions come with access to the multi-media website and the cost might be worthwhile for an enrolled student, but it is possible to pay for website access for about $70.

Had to buy for Biology class

I read other reviews and also purchased the study-book which helps.
This book is for Biology majors and assumes a solid understanding of basic inorganic and organic chemistry.
I tried to save money buy purchasing a used version.
The college bookstore listed the used book purchase as $191.
Amazon new was $121.
Used was around $40.
The problem with the used versions were the LONG time in delivery.
Perhaps I'm spoiled by Amazon Prime. In hindsight I wish I purchased the $121 Amazon prime version

Some cosmetic damage on binding

I havent started taking this class so I havent had a chance to flip through it. Overall, it looks like a well used book. It is quite thick so next semester I plan on purchasing a tablet to upload books in so I want have the weight of carrying heavy books.
