Wisdom for Life

I read this book because I had heard of Joseph Campbell who had written along the lines of spirituality as i was learning it. At first, I was dismayed because I couldn't wrap my head around how mythology can really serve mankind for anything other than entertainment. However, I now have a brighter enlightenment of not only God and our relationship with Him, but also of mankind and the how and why behind what we do to survive on this planet. Wisdom personified is all I can say about this book

The Paperback Power of Myth

The video interview with Joseph Campbell is quite compelling. This book is a companion to the video and would be hard to fully appreciate without it.
The video of course was highly editted; but, it does provide visuals that don't translate well into text. For example, when talking about Star Wars, it's helpful to see the clips to which they allude. On the otherhand, the text provides the opportunity to review in greater detail the nuances of what was said and the transcript is more complete without giving the impression of just being a bunch of outtakes.
In the intro to the book we learn that Jackie Kennedy played an important role in the creation of the book and video; something that I perhaps missed when watching the video credits. Campbell's influence on others seems at least as intriguing as his work.
My recommendation, if you're new to Campbell: watch the video. If you find yourself wanting more after 6 hours of fencing with Moyers; read the book. If you don't make it through all 6 hours, skip the book, it is more of the same.

Such an interesting book written as a dialogue between Joseph Campbell and the journalist Bill Moyers. It opens new perspectives on the myths and how people are building their myths and perceptions.
