Bored All The Way Through

I eventually gave up, a little more than 3/4 of the way through. Long drawn out conversations about technical things. Too much about the personal lives of characters when it really does nothing but stop the story dead in its tracks every time the characters' personal lives are mentioned. Too much backstory for characters that just end up dying. The story actually introduces, names and follows one character for only a few moments of read time before he dies.
The story moves very slowly. People talk about their personal convictions a lot, but there's really no reason for it. Once we understand their motivations, there's no reason for them to keep talking about it, and no need to know the motivations of every minor character.
As for the "pandemic," [Spoiler, kind of....................] it moves so slowly that by 3/4 of the book only a small portion of the population in 4 countries has even been infected, and a very promising vaccine was introduced way near the beginning, so the suspense isn't really there.
With a good editor, this might have been 100 pages shorter and a good book.

Very suspenseful and scary

Daniel Kalla knows how to tell a scary tale, one that unfortunately rings true in these days of ISIS and other Islamic terrorist groups. I enjoyed getting to know his characters, even if they they were a bit one dimensional and predictable. If you are looking for an exciting read, I recommend Pandemic.

A killer debut novel.

I love to read thrillers, but not particularly medical thrillers. That's probably because as a neurosurgeon I have spent my entire medical career dealing with more than enough spine-chilling medical challenges. However, PANDEMIC's prolog totally hooked me. Rather than rehashing the tired plots of an evil HMO or serial killers lurking within the darkened, gurney littered halls of Podunk General Hospital, Kalla presents a timely and very plausible bioterrorism scenario. Particularly timely in view of the recent bird flu outbreaks in Asia. Like many readers, I enjoy learning something from a book, but the problem with some medical thrillers is feeling I'm being lectured to. (I get my fill of that during CME courses.) Not so with PANDEMIC. Kalla presents interesting tidbits about epidemiology and viruses seamlessly during very real dialog between very real characters.
I rate PANDEMIC an enthusiastic three thumbs up and eagerly look forward to snapping up Kalla's next novel.
